The single most important question to ask when hiring a wedding photographer.

Here it is: “Can I see an entire gallery of delivered images from a recent wedding?”

That’s it.

Sure, there’s a bunch of other questions you could ask - but this is the big one - there’s no other question you could ask that will tell you so much.

Wedding photography is a unique, creative field. You have to work in all sorts of conditions, using all sorts of different lighting, with all sorts of different people, and you have to be able to do it consistently well, all. day. long.

Fun fact: Photographers usually display their best 20 or 30 images on their website from the last few years. That’s not really representative of what you get on your wedding day, is it?

Getting the chance to pour through an entire gallery will tell you lots:

• What’s their shooting style? - Documentary? Posey? Natural?

• What’s their editing style? - Light and airy? Dark and moody? Contrasty and punchy?

• How’s the quality? - Do the images look consistent from one to the next? Is it consistently great or a bit hit ‘n’ miss? How does it look outdoors vs indoors?

• What do you get? - How many images? What’s the mix of colour vs black & white?

• Does it tell a story? - Wedding photography is more than just a few good shots of people and things - it should tell a complete story of the day.

You should be able to imagine yourselves, your family and friends in these pictures and get excited. They are a good representation of how your own wedding day will be captured so if you don’t get “the feels”, ask the same question of another photographer.
